Peacock bass, also known as the tucunaré or cichla, is a freshwater fish found in the Amazon River basin in South America. It is a member of the cichlidae family, which also includes well-known aquarium fish such as the angelfish and the discus. Peacock bass are known for their vibrant colors, with males having elongated dorsal and anal fins, and for their aggressive behavior and strong fighting capabilities, which makes them popular among sport fishermen.
They are typically found in still waters such as lakes and swamps, as well as in slow-moving parts of rivers and creeks, and feeds on smaller fish and crustaceans. They can grow up to 24″ – 60cm in length and weight of 10 lbs – 4.5 kg.
They are considered invasive species in some places like Hawaii and Florida where they were introduced in the 80s.
